I have been lurking through this website for the past week trying to obtain information to assist my father in-law during his time in the USAF.
Doug served as an Aerial Equipment Repairman (AGE) out of Yokota Air Base and we have been trying to claim some VA benefits to only be denied. I am retiring from the USAF myself and now have more time to advocate and research his service.
I wanted to share a picture because believe it or not - it doesn't seem many people have the front side of the Cam Ranh AB Welcome sign. So here it is...
In this picture we can see who the Wing Commander was along with names of key personnel. I was able to narrow down a timeline for Doug. His Form-7 only states he went TDY to Southeast Asia and there was never any proof he stepped foot on Vietnam soil. I'm passing this along to help others and through my limited abilities of adjusting his picture I have been able to come away with the following information:
Left Column names from Welcome Sign:
President Of USA Lyndon B. Johnson
22 Nov 1963- 20 Jan 1969
SEC DEF Robert McNamara
21 Jan 1961 – 29 Feb 1968
SEC AF Dr. Harold Brown
1 Oct 1965 – 15 Feb 1969
CSAF Gen John McConnell
1 Feb 1965 – 31 July 1969
CINCPAC Admiral U.S. Grant Sharp Jr.
30 June 1964 – 31 July 1968
CINCPACAF General John D. Ryan
1 Feb 1967 – 1 Aug 1968
MACV General William Westmoreland
1 June 1964 -30 June 1968
UnderSecretary of Air Force Norman S. Paul
Right Column Names:
General B. K. Holloway
General G. P Disosway
Senator Symington
Bob Hope
Cardinal Spellman
Billy Graham
Gen E G Wheeler
Gen Hunter Harris
General Kenneth Burton Hobson
General H. M Estes
General Creighton Abrams
I don't really understand the names on the right side. Is this a distinguished list of visitors at Cam Ranh AB? Any additional information would be great!
Thanks - Jason
